From field to endeavor: the NIW specificity test

A four-part test for turning a broad field or career goal into a proposed endeavor that can be examined against actual evidence.

A field names the professional area; a proposed endeavor names the work to be advanced. A usable endeavor lets an outside reader identify the work, users or setting, delivery mechanism, defined problem, and evidence connecting the applicant to the plan.

Statements such as 'I work in artificial intelligence,' 'I am a researcher,' or 'I will improve U.S. manufacturing' describe a field, role, or aspiration. They do not yet tell the reader what work will be done or how it will move from the applicant to a broader result.

Begin with a working sentence: 'I will [specific work] for [identified users or setting] through [method or delivery path] to address [defined problem].' It is a diagnostic template, not petition language; its job is to make vague assumptions visible.
